One reads the same in the Masnavi of Jelal-ud-Din Rumi, "Seventy-two forms I have worn and have come to witness this same spring of continual change."

This also refers to the divine Consciousness which wears various forms and comes to witness this world of changes; it is not the seventy-two comings of Maulana Rumi himself. Seventy-two is symbolical of many; otherwise it would mean that since the human creation the divine Consciousness visited the earth only seventy-two times, which would be very few times for such a great length of time.
